What Are Slug (and Snail) Killers?

How Do Slug (and Snail) Killers Work?
Each active ingredient has a different mode of action. We’ll look at each one in turn.
- Metaldehydeis one that works primarily in the stomach, producing its toxic effects after it has been ingested. For humans, it is highly toxic in gaseous form, “mildly” toxic when it is ingested, and slightly toxic to the touch.
- Iron Phosphateis a stomach poison for slugs and snails. It causes damage to the tissue in their digestive tract. They stop eating and soon die but the exact mode of action still isn’t clear. For humans, iron phosphate is considered very low toxicity when eaten.
- Sulfuris present in most of the food we eat but for insects and mollusks, it creates problems in the stomach, digestive tract, and lungs. It also creates neurological problems leading to brain cell death. The exact mode of action is still poorly understood.
- Ferric Sodium EDTAworks in much the same way as iron phosphate, only faster. Because it works faster, less of it is required to kill slugs and snails. It is also somewhat more toxic to people than iron phosphate.
Are Slug (and Snail) Killers Effective For Killing Slugs and Snails?
They are very effective. Most of the active ingredients used in slug baits will kill the slugs and snails within a week. Some will kill them in only three days.
However, not all of them withstand heavy rain very well and will have to be reapplied frequently.
How To Use Slug (and Snail) Killers
Slugs and snails are most oftenactive during periods of warmth and high humidity or rain. They prefer their food in the same condition, therefore the best time to distribute the bait is in the evening around sunset.

Don’t let them clump up in piles. Moisture can become trapped in the piles and the bait will get moldy.

Baits that use metaldehyde as the active ingredient are not safe around pets or children and should be restricted to those areas pets and children don’t have access to.
Greenhouses are a good example of a safe place to use metaldehyde-based baits.
The other active ingredients are generally regarded as safe around pets and children.
How Do You Find the Best Slug (and Snail) Killer?
- The first thing you should look for is a bait that is safe around children and pets. Safety should always come first.
- Slug baits have to be used outside and heavy rains often wash away or dissolve them. Look for baits that can withstand several heavy rains. This reduces how many times you’ll have to reapply them.
- Some baits are bright white, which makes them stand out like a sore thumb on your lawn or garden. From an aesthetic point of view, dark-colored granules or pellets are preferred.
