What’s the Most Effective Way to Bait a Chipmunk Trap?
Remember:
A bait is only effective if itsuccessfully lures a chipmunk inside of a trapand sets the rest of the trap in motion.
There are a couple precautions to take when baiting a chipmunk trap for maximum efficiency of the bait:
- The bait should be placed far enough inside that the entire body (tail included) will be trapped by the door snapping closed.
- The bait placement should also encourage the chipmunk to step on the spring to activate the door.
- Be sure to wear gloves when baiting your trap, as chipmunks can detect human scents.
Do Other Animals Eat Chipmunk Bait?
In some cases, other predators (such as mice or rats) tend to give homeowners further headaches as they swipe the baits meant for the chipmunks.
When using a box trap, a larger animal like a raccoon can walk inside to steal the bait and end up getting trapped. This would lead to the animal panicking and possibly dying a slow, painful death.
