What Are Rat Bait Stations?
These kinds of bait boxes, regulated by the EPA under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) are calledtamper-resistant or tamper-proof bait boxes. Small openings allow the entrance of rats and mice but deter larger animals from entering.
The bait stations also have to meet minimum standards for resisting biting and gnawing by other animals, as well as resist being opened people using their bare hands.
How Do Rat Bait Stations Work?
Bait stations contain metal rods to hold the bait blocks in place. The blocks are manufactured with holes bored through them for that purpose. The blocks contain an attractant such as peanut butter or peanut butter flavor to draw in the rats.
The active ingredient varies from one manufacturer to another. Here are a few of them.
Bromadiolone:A second-generation anticoagulant, it’s an anticoagulant that causes internal bleeding. It kills after a single feeding.
Bromethalin: Apale, odorless, crystalline solid compound, it attacks the central nervous system, disrupting the production of ATP. Just one nibble is enough to kill most rats.
Diphacinone: Another anticoagulant bait, this one is weaker than others, requiring several feedings before death results.
Any of these active ingredients will kill Norway rats, roof rats, mice, and voles.
Are Rat Bait Stations Effective?
Yes. We’ve used them to kill thousands of rats over our years of fieldwork. The best part is, you don’t have to deal with the dead rats.
When the rats get sick from the poison, they crawl off to their hiding holes to die.
How To Use A Rat Bait Station
Open the bait station and insert the included metal rods. Slide the blocks over metal rods until they are all full. Close the lid and press down firmly until it clicks in place. Place the trap(s) in areas where you see the most rat droppings.
Place the station flush against a wall where the rats will be sure to encounter it.
